A Reputation for Quality Neck Pain Treatment That is Comprehensive, Effective and One-on-One with your Physical Therapist

At Purple Mountain Physical Therapy our licensed physical therapists specialize in treating neck and head pain as well as jaw (TMJ), spine and pelvic problems. Our patients who come to us for relief from neck and head pain are choosing us because they want pain relief, reduction in neck stiffness and a long-term solution to resolve head and neck pain. By working with the Purple Mountain PT physical therapists, you are taking the first step towards properly treating your neck and feeling better. If you would like information about our comprehensive treatments for neck and head pain (such as cervicogenic headaches or base of skull pain), reach out to us at (616) 516-4334 or submit on online question here and we will be in touch!

Your physical therapy appointments for your neck and head pain are one-on-one with your physical therapist for 55 minutes and will include a comprehensive PT rehabilitation treatment plan that includes a whole-body approach to resolving your neck pain, stiffness or headaches.

This contrasts with other approaches that are not thorough and may not include corrective exercises, neural calming, neck and head manual therapy as well as whole body treatments. For example, we often treat a patient’s TMJ disorder in conjunction with their neck. Or, we may treat your hips and pelvis to help your neck and head pain. Because we specialize in treating neck and head pain, you will be working with a physical therapist who will customize your treatment plan based on your evaluation findings, strengths and weakness, joint stiffness, posture, myofascial tension and goals. Does Your Head and Neck Pain Cause Stiffness, Muscle Tension, Shooting Pain, Trouble Moving Your Neck, Pain When Sleeping? Our Physical Therapists Are Here to Help!

Our patients tell us that they are tired of dealing with neck stiffness and pain. Many of our patients have neck or head pain that has been on and off for quite a while and despite all the things they have tried, they can’t get it to go away, it just comes back. Other people come to us with a new episode of neck pain that has not occurred before and usually involves considerable muscle spasm and neck stiffness and sometimes sharp, shooting nerve pain. We can help both chronic and recurring neck pain as well as acute or new neck and head pain.

In addition to neck joint stiffness and pain, our patients have muscle guarding and tension that is causing their headaches or pain. We provide PT to alleviate this.

Our licensed physical therapists have advanced training specific to helping resolve muscle trigger points, myofascial restrictions, muscle guarding, nerve pain and general muscle tension. Often muscle tension, fascia restrictions, postural habits and strength deficits in the neck, shoulders, midback and core are a major source of your pain. Our PTs are with you the entire 55-minute appointment; we don’t treat other patients while we treat you! Because you work directly with your PT the entire time, you will be able to receive the whole-body treatments that help your pain and muscle tension. These can include gentle manual therapies such as myofascial release and joint mobilization, corrective exercises, postural alignment, breathing exercises, core muscle strengthening, what to do at home to help yourself and more. Our patients appreciate our whole-body care and find that it makes sense that if their neck is hurting them, it is helpful for us to assess and treat myofascial restrictions in your shoulders, chest and pecs, rib cage, shoulder blades, low back, hips and pelvis and legs. If you have a lot of muscle tension and tightness in your head, neck or jaw, reach out to see if we can help you. You can reach us at (616) 516-4334 to talk with one of our staff.

We Begin to Help Your Neck and Head Pain by Providing a Complete Evaluation.

Your neck evaluation will assess your muscle tension, joint stiffness, range of motion and alignment, strength and weaknesses, nerves, postural adaptations and more. A comprehensive initial evaluation also helps us identify movement dysfunction or postural changes that can be addressed with patient education, manual techniques, therapeutic exercise and correcting your muscular imbalances in strength and flexibility. Ongoing reassessment during your physical therapy treatment provides the opportunity for us to always be working to achieve your goals of helping your head and neck pain. By partnering with you and providing comprehensive and effective physical therapy we expect you to experience resolution of your neck and head pain. At each visit we modify or progress your program according to what you need. Following an appointment, patients regularly tell us that their neck feels so much looser, less muscle tension and pain and it is easier to move. It’s easy to take the first step to help your head and neck pain through our physical therapy; simply call us at (616) 516-4334 and we will answer any questions you have.

You Need Neck and Head Pain Relief, that is Our First Priority

Our patients tell us that they find themselves constantly rubbing their neck, buying new pillows, trying to stretch their neck and taking ibuprofen or other prescription medications. They often have a dull headache at the base of their skull or a head ache that extends from their neck up the back of their head to the top of the head. Some of our patients also have jaw pain, clicking or muscle tension. If you have a TMJ disorder, we will include treatment to this while we treat your head and neck pain. We understand that chronic nagging head & neck pain can be frustrating for you to help on your own and can disrupt sleep, enjoyment of life and ability to simply move with ease. For this reason, our priority is for you to get pain relief. We begin treatment at your very first appointment. Treating the underlying causes of head and neck pain with our whole-body treatment approach is your next step toward achieving long-term relief and recovery. Most of our patients come to us having tried a number of other things to help their neck pain or headaches and find that our physical therapy combines effective hands-on treatments with therapeutic exercises and postural correction and these things lead to long-term relief. If this sounds interesting to you, call us at (616) 516-4334 to talk to one of our staff members to learn more.

To Effectively Treat Your Head and Neck Pain, You Can Expect A Hands-on Approach

Our licensed physical therapists have advanced training in a variety of helpful manual therapy methods for the head and neck and whole body. Hands-on techniques, in most cases, are an essential part of your successful head and neck pain treatment program. Clinical practice guidelines advise cervical (neck) mobilization combined with exercise therapy to help your pain and this is what we provide you. Our therapists use techniques that may include myofascial release, trigger point release, deep tissue massage, strain counterstrain manual therapy, active release methods, mobilization of tissues and joints with movement, joint mobilization, spine balancing and more. These methods are directed to your neck and head and anywhere else that you may have restrictions, which may include your entire spine, pelvis, thighs, shoulders or arms. Patients often comment that they can feel that we are “on the right spot.” We use these hands-on methods to assist with pain relief, the recovery of range of motion so your neck is not as stiff and tense, to reestablish correct movement patterns, and alleviate muscle related pain and tightness. Coupled with patient education and therapeutic exercise, the results can be dramatic and long lasting. If this is what you think you may need, we are here to help. Reach us at (616) 516-4334. Located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, we serve patients who come to us from all over the state.

We Also Include Therapeutic Exercises and Postural Corrective Methods to Help Your Head and Neck Pain

The corrective exercises that our physical therapists design for you are based on the specifics of your muscle imbalances, postural alignment, weaknesses, fascial tension and muscle stiffness or tightness. We include neck strengthening exercises. We may include exercises to improve your thoracic (midback) spine mobility and shoulder strength. Depending on your needs, you may need to improve your core strength, hip or shoulder flexibility. We often find that patients have dis-coordination between their head and neck muscles and the rest of their core, including their breathing muscles, abdominal wall and lower back. Usually, patients have postural adaptations that place strain through the head and neck. For this we customize a postural correction program for you that may include stretching, strengthening, moving into better alignment and attention to your feet, knees, pelvis, hips, SI joint, lower back, rib cage, thoracic spine and shoulders. We find that our patients have very rarely been given an appropriate therapeutic exercise program to help their head and neck pain. As a result, their pain continually comes back. If you need a more comprehensive and effective approach to get relief from your neck pain or cervicogenic headaches, call us at (616) 516-4334 to inquire about cost and availability.

You Can Expect Instruction in Self Care, Exercises and Behavioral Modification

We know that you want to figure out how to feel better so that you don’t continually experience episodes of neck and head pain. Our physical therapists will instruct you in what exercises you can include to best help your body. Every person’s needs are different and, therefore, we customize your exercise program to your body and abilities. We also recognize that for some people daily stress, even “good” stress, is contributing to their chronic head and neck pain. When needed, we include neural calming techniques and pain neuroscience education in your treatment plan and help you begin the process of balancing your nervous system, calming your muscle tension and managing stress differently, so it doesn’t always end up causing neck or jaw pain. We know that you aren’t sure what to do to help your headaches, neck muscle tension and neck pain. Our PTs can take the guesswork out of this process and give you a clear path forward. You can learn more by talking with one of our staff members at (616) 516-4334.
