Your Endometriosis Physical Therapy Begins with an Evaluation
When we work with anyone who has endometriosis, you can expect a detailed evaluation. This begins with discussing your history, symptoms and goals. We are interested to know all of the treatments you have had and medications you are taking. We provide trauma informed care, so you can expect to feel safe, welcomed and heard. We meet in a private, comfortable treatment room and your appointment is upto 55 minutes in length and always with the same doctor of physical therapy. We will review your bladder, bowel and intimacy related symptoms and concerns. We like to understand your lifestyle, interests and goals. Our endometriosis treatment is always a partnership between you and us; together we find a therapeutic and meaningful path forward for you. We begin treatment for endometriosis at this first appointment, so you should expect to feel well cared for from day one.
During the evaluation we will complete a musculoskeletal examination
Because of chronic pelvic pain, our patients who have endometriosis typically have significant orthopedic and musculoskeletal considerations, such as adaptive postural changes due to chronic abdominal pain. Our evaluation may include examination of your hips, low back, thoracic spine, neck, posture, abdomen, legs and pelvic floor muscles. We assess and treat all of your muscles, nerves, scars, joints and fascia. It is common with endometriosis that you may experience difficulty with your bladder or bowels. Because of this, we offer a complete assessment of all of the myofascial tissues, joints and nerves that influence bladder and bowel function. This includes areas of your entire spine, hips, abdomen, legs and pelvis. Our endometriosis treatment is therapeutic, compassionate and effective; if you would like to learn more, contact us here.
Your endometriosis physical therapy will treat your trigger points, muscle guarding, fascia restrictions, pinched nerves and overactive abdominal muscles and pelvic floor dysfunction.
With endometriosis there is so much guarding and postural adaptations in the entire body. This is why our treatment for endometriosis is holistic. One of the most important things we want to accomplish is to reduce muscular trigger points and fascial restrictions while enhancing blood flow to tissues. We offer myofascial release, heart rate variability coherence biofeedback training, neural balancing, trigger point release, dry needling, neuromuscular re-education, scar tissue release and more. We’ve written another blog on pelvic pain, if you are interested in reading it, click here.
All of our patients who have endometriosis receive a comprehensive and detailed list of self-care and home exercises.
This list is customized to your body and preferences. We work with you to develop a flare busting to-do list. We also teach you how to calm your nervous system and ease your response to pain. We will give you specific exercises that may be a combination of stretching, strengthening, breathing exercises, postural correction or other easing exercises. Our goal is to get you active and functioning again. Our clinic space has a beautiful area for exercise based treatments, as well. If you are frustrated and not clear on what you should and should not be doing at home to help yourself feel better, give us a call to learn more about how we customize a holistic program. By “holistic” we mean that, together with your input, we will come up with specific mind, body and spirit related interventions that you can be doing at home. These include everything from exercise to nutrition to relaxation to social engagement and anything else we determine you may need. If you are serious about improving your quality of life, pelvic PT can be your best friend!
We have worked with countless women over the years who have told us that the PT they’ve received with us has given them their lives back. These women have been all ages, ranging from late teens to past menopause. Endometriosis, unfortunately, can continue to bother you even in menopause. Most of the people we work with tell us that they wished they had been referred to PT sooner. As a pelvic PT who specializes in providing holistic care for people with chronic pelvic pain, I can tell you that the lack of support to women experiencing endometriosis is ridiculous. If you’ve been diagnosed with endo you should automatically be sent to a pelvic PT; we know how to help you move, reduce muscle guarding, resolve pelvic floor dysfunction and more. Yes, excision surgery is the gold standard surgical care. And, pelvic PT is the gold standard rehabilitation care for endometriosis. You deserve support and to feel better. Our patients tell us that this endometriosis physical therapy gave them their life back!
Here is a testimonial from one patient who lives in another state and flew to see us for an intensive 6 hours of treatment in one week:
My week with Maureen was the most encouraging, beneficial and life-changing time I’ve spent since my PFD began. Along with being kind and understanding, she is also incredibly knowledgeable, and has a sixth sense when it comes to understanding the human body. Unlike the other physical therapists who’ve treated my PFD, Maureen uses her training and intuition to treat PFD with a whole body approach.
I returned home feeling the direct positive benefits of Maureen’s physical therapy; with a better understanding of PFD and my body; and most importantly, a belief that I don’t have to just manage my pain: I can recover. In order to do so, I also returned with a significant list of brand new tasks and tools that I have slowly but successfully incorporated into my life. Maureen’s confidence that my body and soul will continue to feel better has given me newfound strength and patience to practice my new regimen as I heal.
